We’re dedicated to supporting you every step of the way toward becoming a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). Our comprehensive training program is designed to help you succeed across all three parts of the ADI qualification process.
From preparing for the theory test (Part 1) with in-depth study resources and mock exams, to hands-on driving instruction for the practical test (Part 2), and expert coaching for the instructional ability test (Part 3), we ensure you are fully equipped for success. With our experienced trainers, personalized feedback, and client-centred approach, you’ll gain the knowledge and confidence needed to launch a successful career as a professional ADI.
To pass Part 1, you must succeed in two sections:
Multiple Choice Test: 100 questions split into four categories. You must score at least 80% in each section and an overall score of 85 to pass.
Hazard Perception Test: You’ll need to score at least 57 out of 75 possible points by identifying developing hazards in a series of video clips.
This practical test evaluates your driving competence and includes five key elements:
Eyesight Check
You must read a number plate from:
27 metres (new-style plate)
27.5 metres (old-style plate)
Failing this counts as one of your three attempts at the Part 2 test.
‘Show Me, Tell Me’ Questions
Answer 3 “tell me” questions before driving and 2 “show me” questions while driving.
You’ll receive a fault for incorrect answers, and a serious fault if you lose control while performing a “show me” task.
General Driving Ability
Demonstrate expert control, proper road use, hazard awareness, sound judgment, and consideration for others.
You may also be asked to perform an emergency stop.
Reversing Manoeuvres
Perform 2 of the following:
Parallel park
Reverse into or out of a bay
Pull up on the right, reverse, and rejoin traffic
Independent Driving
Follow sat nav instructions or traffic signs for around 20 minutes.
Mistakes won’t necessarily fail you unless they are serious or dangerous.
In this final part, a DVSA examiner observes you conducting a 45-minute client-focused driving lesson with one of your pupils.
Start of Lesson: Outline the goals and risk management in under 3 minutes.
Driving Time: Your pupil should drive for approximately 40 minutes.
End of Lesson: Allow up to 3 minutes for pupil reflection.
You’ll be assessed on 17 competencies grouped under:
Lesson Planning
Risk Management
Teaching & Learning Strategies
Each area is scored from 0 to 3. Your total score determines your result:
| Total Score | Grade | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 0–30 | Fail | Does not meet required standard |
| 31–42 | Grade B | Sufficient to join ADI register |
| 43–51 | Grade A | High-quality instruction |
Note:
Scoring 7 or less in the risk management category results in an automatic fail.
The lesson may be terminated if unsafe behaviour is observed.
Once you pass the Part 3 test, you can apply for your first ADI badge—this must be done within 12 months, or you’ll need to retake all three parts again.
